With the resignation of Mike McMillan as superintendent of Delta County Schools, the school board will launch a candidate search. In the meantime, an interim has been hired. In addition to these costs, the board faces increased legal fees. This resignation will cost an estimated $268,088+ — the same as roughly 6.3 teacher salaries.
McMillan was given a severance package, paid unused sick and vacation time, and retirement benefits totaling $248,588. The interim superintendent, Dr. Jerre Doss, has been hired on a two-week contract for $5,000. If, after this trial period Dr. Doss accepts the interim position officially, his salary will be negotiated. No information could be given at all on this expected salary until the negotiations are final.
Last year, McMillan was paid a little over $124,000, or $10,333 a month. No one at the district office, or the school district attorney, would comment if Doss’s salary would be even close to comparable to McMillan’s leaving salary. If the two-week trial period is successful, and Dr. Doss is hired as the interim, he is expected to be on the job for four months.
The Colorado Association of School Boards has been hired by the school board to launch a superintendent search. Representatives from CASB proposed a cost of $12,000 plus expenses, which the board agreed to. Last year, when Montrose County did a superintendent search, it cost about $15,000.
The issue has racked up $2,500 in attorney’s fees above and beyond the monthly charges assessed by the attorney.
All money for the search, salary and other costs associated with this will come from the general fund.
