Dear Editor:

RE: Delta County Phone Tariffs

I know first hand the importance of the 911 tool for emergency services, having sat in that chair, feeling the stress and frustration that comes with the job. I have also been on the street, getting the call from dispatch, with that stress and frustration. Yes, another dispatcher would be of great value.

However, the Delta County Commissioners recently increased the 911 emergency service surcharge ((aka TAX) ((my emphasis)) by 16.68 percent. That’s right, 16.68 percent ! ((my emphasis)) This increase is only for the residents of the unincorporated areas of Delta County. The Commissioners have asked the six municipalities in the county to pass their own resolutions increasing the tariff in their respective jurisdictions so the rate will be consistent throughout the county.

Question: Of what incentive do the people inside those municipalities have to raise their taxes when Delta County is already subsidizing the additional expense?
